QUICK BACKGROUND:
The Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) is an annual programme sponsored by the Japanese Government and supported by the member-countries of ASEAN.
The Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) is an annual programme sponsored by the Japanese Government and supported by the member-countries of ASEAN.
The programme brings together more than 300 youth from ASEAN countries and Japan, providing them with the unique opportunity to live together on board the Japanese ship Nippon Maru for over 40 days.
SSEAYP started in January 1974 based on Joint Statements issued between Japan and the five ASEAN countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined in 1985. Vietnam participated in the programme in 1996 while Laos and Myanmar participated in 1998, and Cambodia in 2000.
The aim of SSEAYP is to foster friendship and greater understanding among young people from Japan and ASEAN countries. It also seeks to broaden their international outlook.
A series of activities are lined up for the selected participants. The programme during the voyages includes discussions on relevant social and youth issues, cultural introductions, sports, recreation and club activities. While activities at each Country port-of-call include interaction with the local youth, courtesy calls on dignitaries and institutional visits, as well as community service and homestay experience.
PROGRAM DURATION:
Intensive training preparation in Manila for the Philippine Team for almost 45days.
Actual SSEAYP Program for over 40days.

Asian Studies in Asia (ASIA) Fellows Award

“The Awards are research grants that support young and middle-level Asian professionals to carry out a research project for a period of six to nine months in any one of the eighteen participating countries and one territory indicated, except their own.
The ASIA Fellows Awards are given in the fields of arts, culture, humanities and social sciences. Any research project that will study or further investigate human activities may be considered for the award.
Eligible applicants are citizens of and residents in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam may apply. Research projects can be carried out only in any one of the above mentioned countries (except the applicant’s own). However, residents of Hong Kong cannot apply for the fellowship and conduct their research in China or vice versa; and citizens of Singapore cannot apply for the fellowship and conduct research in Malaysia or vice versa.
Applicants must have a Master’s/Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training and experiences (minimum of 3 years of university teaching experiences for scholars or 5 years of work experience for professionals); 45 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. However, those up to 50 years old proposing to do research in the field of Humanities may be given special consideration; and Proficiency in English or in the language of the host country appropriate to the proposed research project.
Those who are currently enrolled in a degree program, or have just completed a degree program for less than one to two years will not be eligible to apply. Those who were a recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship grant within the last two years prior to the application is also ineligible.
The Award shall include the following provisions: Round-trip travel between home country and host country; Maintenance Allowance; In-country living allowance to cover housing and other expenses based upon the cost-of-living in the host country;
Limited Accident and Health Insurance; Field Trip/Language Training Allowance; Research Allowance including computer purchase and internet connectivity to communicate with colleagues, other ASIA Fellows and to access the Asian Scholarship Foundation website; Excess Baggage/Shipping Allowance
The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.
The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the countries of Northeast, South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing. The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, establish a multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines, professional fields and countries, stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison, and contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities. The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career Asian scholars, and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and an understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research.
